USA violence

2008-09-16 03:08:43

I quite agree that the USA murder rate is far too high, much higher than
most "developed nations" but the cause of that may not be the
availability of guns in our society. We have a vast variation of
violent activity in different societal settings, with much higher murder
rates in places where we have the most varied cultures. In nations such
as Sweden where most everyone is Caucasian and Lutheran the murder rate
nears zero per 100,00 per year. In Minnesota, USA where the population
is almost the same as Sweden's but any bozo can buy a gun the murder
rate is almost zero. In inner city Dallas where we have a vast array of
ethnic groups and religions the murder rate is 20 times as high. What
causes tension. What causes humans to not perceive others as less than
human (as Germans did Jews during the Nazi era)? That, much more than
available weaponry causes the murder rate to rise. If I don't like you
or fear you and think you are less signoficant than me I will do you in.
With a gun, a knife, a stick, something.
I wish gun control in the USA were somewhat greater. We do especially
have the occassional madman who uses an automatic weapon to kill quite a
number of people. But sometimes they make bombs out of fertilizer.

Breads.<Repy to Bobbie>

Hi Bobbie,
I'm not getting much done today, just doing the Internet, that's all I feel like
doing today! I'll force myself out of this chair in a minute to go for a walk.
Cracker Barrel Restaurants and the Stores have sourdough bread you can purchase
thru the mail.
Now to get it down the gullet, have you tried dunking it like I do a donut?
When we eat pizza out, I gross everybody out by taking the left over pizza
"rind," mine, like a bread stick and dip it in my root beer, it's GOOD! Goes
down easier, too!

Hi folks Im back

2008-09-15 18:53:11

My trip to New York went quite well, my aunt was happy to see me and I her
This was my first flight since my stroke 3 years ago and all went well, no
problems
Because I live a zillion miles from any where , my flight was more like a
mail run
several stops going and comming the many security and screening stops , were
quick and curtieous I did mention that I was handicaped and was allowed to
preboard
early . I found this a big help
On my return home , i discovered that I was bounced and can from our group by

Breads.

I really like sourdough bread too, but I find it a little tougher and harder
to get down.

makes 'em bleed and also not recommended if brain bleeds are in your history and
just MAYBE in your future!"
when you are more sensitive to that kind of thing and having to tell someone
that your nether regions were playing up. I got it from picking up something too
heavy and, as we used to say: 'Straining your foofy valve.' I said to Jan the
other day that my haemorrhagic stroke was like having a haemorrhoid on the
brain. Same thing, different name. Maybe I was thinking too hard.
==============
Hi Ken,
You know what?
The hemorrhoid surgery was worse than the brain bleed. MAN THAT HURT! LASER
surgery, too. A year to quit bleeding and a year and a half to quit hurting.
It is just like having a scabby sore on your arm and peeling that newly made
scab off every time you go about your business. I'm glad I had the surgery done
though, now that it is over with. Well, I got to use my wife's SUPER MAXI PADS
Kotex
What is tough in the brain, is, even one cc of blood is very traumatic as there
is no place for the blood to go, unless, surgery to let it bleed out and backed
up pressure released. I did not have surgey. The initial incident was
extremely painful for a minute or two, two separate incidents, 10 minutes apart,
then the pain was over. What really sucked was dealing with the after effects
of the damage done to brain cells by the bleed, but I'm sure you know this from
your experience, but no pain.

Whitegoose, I have Craig Claiborne's New York Times Cookbook too. It's a
good one.

==============
Hi Whitegoose,
I agree with you about guns. There has to be a better way to control the
problem. But even if guns wre banned, they'd find a way in thru smugglers.
One inventer I knew of envisioned somehow putting an identifiable microchip
within each bullet so as to trace the owner/purchaser of the bullets, not the
guns.
I never fired a weapon before the SEABEES. Then, a mess of light weapons & the
M60 machine gun, I fired expert with a M-16 rifle. So, me & weapons only
happened in the military. I have no gun or rifle in my house, I don't care to
kill any beautiful animals. If necessary there are other ways to inflict damage
to an intruder, I don't need a gun. Even, currently with this SNIPER incident,
packing a gun won't help anybody.
I read the CONSTITUTION as bearing arms only WITHIN the use of a well organized
Militia, like the Colonial MINUTEMEN.
Most people that come to our neighborhood, even Pastors, freak out, because of
my neighbors. We have a Civil War era house, owned within the family since 1920
and as our older neighbors are dying off, the "low life" move in because of more
affordable housing, mostly all minority types and the drug culture that goes
with it, but not all are bad. I get along with these people. Maybe I should
keep a shotgun behind the front door, but I don't OR haven't, YET! AND as to NY
State law, I have no right to defend myself with LETHAL FORCE!

Hi,
SAILING? Not if you did the U.S.S. BLACKJACK in Northeast Harbor, Maine!
GHADS, even I was scared!
=========
I thought of that, especially the 1st night ALONE after everybody left me there
in the critical care ward.
To die this way is senseless. I'd rather do the dying thing helping someone
else to live, a fire, an accident, or with my buddies on the battlefield.
That's if I had a choice!
I've lived long enough. I've had some fun. With all my problems, I'm getting
tired of fighting them. The arthritis is a bitch! I think that is the cause of
the headaches. The bleed was just something else added to the pile.

Virginia SNIPER

2008-09-14 08:35:42

Hi,
I have not seen this mentioned anywhee in the MEDIA. This guy or guys could very
well be Al Queda terroists doing exactly what they want to achieve---disrupt our
way of life, and make us fearful, actually terrified!
I live my life as realizing today, maybe even this hour may be my last moment on
Earth. Just let your loved ones know you love them. Anything can happen at
anytime. Take some time out of any given day to do something that is fun to do,
especially if you can, with your family.
But, if terrorists, why just one guy, and in only one area of the country?
It sure would be ironic, to survive STROKE, then get murdered.
